There is a fable about a man that had a dream and in his dream he was sharing a meal of fish and rice with a man whom he had an argument with. Taking up the position of being the one wronged, the man that had the dream said, 'until he apologizes I won't have anything to do with him.'
Now fish and rice was his favorite meal. Two things were making his dream unpleasant. One, the man he was at odds with was on the other side of the table equally wanting to enjoy the fish and rice. The second unpleasantry was his chop sticks were three feet long. The chopsticks were so long neither man was able to pick up their favorite food and get it into their own mouths. 'The chopsticks', thought the man in his dream, 'they are the reason for my hunger! It's the chopsticks!' They tried every possible method to feed themselves. Frustrated and feeling deep hunger they remained with a table set before them with no satisfaction of fulfilling their hunger.
Then the man across the table picked up his three foot long chopsticks, broke a piece of fish off the man's dish who was having the dream, gathered some rice onto the sticks and put it to the dreamers mouth and said...let's eat together.
As the men fed one another they began to talk, then they began to laugh, then they were able to forgive. As they fed each other with the three foot long chopsticks they realized...we need each other.
When the man woke up from his dream he was full of joy. His heart was as full as if he ate a full portion of his favorite meal. Calling the man he wouldn't forgive, he invited him over for a meal of fish and rice, and together they enjoyed a meal that truly satisfied.
Jesus says, "love one another as I have loved you. By this all men will know you are my disciples..."
Take your chopsticks and feed the one you are at odds with. Feed them forgiveness, mercy, acceptance. If you have life in you, what you feed them will satisfy your longing soul. To God be the glory.
